Claude's Constitution
What It Is: Claude's Constitution is Anthropic's published governance document defining its AI model's intended values, priorities, and behavioral constraints — including a stated hierarchy (safety, ethics, guideline compliance, helpfulness) and explicit "hard constraints" the model must never cross, released publicly under a Creative Commons license.
Why It Matters: The document references specific risks and needed guardrails to avoid harming important societal structures and protect against “problematic concentrations of power” as well as the “loss of human epistemic autonomy.” This provides useful guidance in applying the Responsibility Principle.
How to Use It: Use to identify possible unintended societal impacts, which can inform companies as they weigh in on AI policy. Use as a case study in corporate self-governance.
