Using EN-Roads to Explore Why Companies Should Prioritize Climate Policy

Video 2 of 2

On December 14, 2023, we spoke with Amy Gobel, Co-founder of the Alliance for Responsible Capitalism for a demonstration of the EN-Roads Simulation to explore “Why Companies Should Prioritize Climate Policy.”

Many executives and MBAs are committed to improving sustainability in their companies, but often find it difficult to move at the scale and speed they believe is needed because the company’s options are limited by the structure of incentives in the marketplace. Yet these companies also influence the policies that shape those incentives. This raises the question: what role should climate policy play in company’s emissions reduction strategies?

In this short Executive Summary, Amy outlines the key takeaways from her longer demonstration using the EN-Roads global climate simulator developed by Climate Interactive, the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, and Ventana Systems, including:
• Why is it important to consider the role of policy in achieving climate goals?
• What are the takeaways for specific companies?

The Corporate Political Responsibility Taskforce (CPRT) provides forums, foresight and frameworks to make it easier for companies to take a principled, responsible approach to their political influences – supporting executives, educators and advocates in advancing CPR as a critical management capacity.

Amy Gobel is the Co-founder of the Alliance for Responsible Capitalism. Amy and her co-founder, Russ Forthuber founded the Alliance with goal of bringing more education about climate policy into the business community and into business education in particular, to equipment future business leaders with the skills needed to develop principled, values-driven sustainability strategies including a thoughtful approach to policy engagement.

Strine and Lund argue that political spending hurts shareholder interests because it increases risks, is not transparent, and correlates with lower financial performance. They make the case that companies should either end all spending, obtain shareholder consent, or limit expenditures to PACs (which are strictly voluntary and have mandated disclosure).

Using the exodus of companies from Russia due to the war against Ukraine, Bennett argues that, with influential economic power worldwide, multinational companies should consider a new geopolitical corporate responsibility to help support international rules-based order when it is under stress or faces challenges. He explains that this order defines the international community in which nations should respect individual sovereignty and obey the law.

The article maps out a non-partisan, principled conception of good corporate citizenship drawing on shared assumptions of the right and the left about the place of corporations in our society and the realities of corporate governance. That conception concentrates on how corporations’ own conduct affects the best interests of their stockholders, workers, communities of operation, consumers, taxpayers, and the environment.
