On September 9, 2021, we spoke with Dylan Tanner & Kendra Haven of Influence Map to explore “CPR and Climate Policy Mapping: Tracking Scope 4 Emissions”

We have seen increasing shareholder attention to companies’ climate impact and a sharp rise in net zero emissions commitments. Despite these advances, might companies be undermining their positive actions through their political influence?

In this module, we explore:

  • How are US companies impacting US climate policy?
  • How do we assess which political influence activities have the most impact?

The Corporate Political Responsibility Taskforce (CPRT)’s Expert Dialogues are in-depth, recorded conversations with academic experts, stakeholder advocates and business practitioners to provide our members and other CPR champions with the expertise and context they need to develop principled, proactive CPR strategies. We invite those interested in a constructive, non-partisan, principles-based discussion.

InfluenceMap was founded in 2015 to track companies’ “Scope 4” emissions: the impact of their influence on climate policy, in the US, Europe and Asia. Their methodology includes direct advocacy, trade association relationships and lobbying intensity, and how they advance policies designed to limit global warming to 1.5° C.

ArticleHarvard Business Review

Strine and Lund argue that political spending hurts shareholder interests because it increases risks, is not transparent, and correlates with lower financial performance.
