On July 21, 2022, we spoke with Yousuf Aftab, Director of Atelier Aftab, to explore “CPR and the Law: Human Rights, Fiduciary Duty & Sustainability Governance ”

As investor interest in ESG accelerates and new challenges emerge, directors and executives can expect more nuanced legal challenges. Among the most difficult of these are questions about the legal aspects of corporate political responsibility.

In this module, we explore:

  • Do “human rights” include “political rights”?
  • What human rights issues are relevant in the US?

Yousuf Aftab, Director of Atelier Aftab, is an ESG lawyer and strategist with deep expertise in business and human rights and a decade of experience advising Fortune 100 companies, governments, and international organizations on all aspects of strategic sustainability--from governance design and due diligence crisis management and disputes.

The Corporate Political Responsibility Taskforce (CPRT)’s Expert Dialogues are in-depth, recorded conversations with academic experts, stakeholder advocates and business practitioners to provide our members and other CPR champions with the expertise and context they need to develop principled, proactive CPR strategies. We invite those interested in a constructive, non-partisan, principles-based discussion.

Drawing on global case studies, he shows how pressures from stakeholders, investors, and regulators require firms to embed political awareness into their purpose, strategy, and daily operations to build trust and resilience.
