Mackenzie Scott's family office has no website, no email list. They send cryptic emails offering funds with no strings attached to hand-selected non-profits. A rave is planned for a Brooklyn warehouse, and flyers are hand-passed to a self-identified group of "ravers." What do these two low-key, low-tech community-focused activations have in common? They are driven by an aligned ethos. A common worldview surfaces as a binder holding a flexible net, cribbing a community together. Bonds of strangers stitch a makeshift network threaded with common beliefs that turn strangers into friends, and then insiders whose positive experience converts attendance into ownership. This is the undercurrent buoying up the whisper network.
The genesis of the whisper network, as envisioned, arises from an amalgam of three conditions: no need for a public face such as a traditional marketing schema, trust in one's own authority to create an entity without the benediction or agreement of any government institution, and a Chatham House rule in effect in perpetuity.
A whisper network has no need for a digital life, as a digital footprint is undesirable residue for a distributed network and like raves, they happen in real life with real people (no bots). It eschews the marketing funnel, the usual growth metrics used to measure expansion, and the impulse to solicit capital through membership dues. A whisper network is financially supported by corporations whose goals or outcomes align with the whisper network's ethos. These funders have their own leaders who participate in the whisper network. Benefits for corporations and the community align behind a raison d'etre. Corporations look to shape and influence how cross-sector leaders are thinking about particular business or societal issues that can affect them. A whisper network allows these corporations to reach leaders even without a lasting ad campaign or press release. There is concentrated power in speech in real time that needs no second digital life but opens doors for genuine leader-to-leader engagement.
The line between cool and necessary connections shortens when the political, cultural, or business conditions shift. It is an environment where unvarnished conversations are welcomed, given the adherence to the Chatham House rule. Questions or comments that would be deemed delicate or risky are shared in confidence. When proponents of an ethos are in the crosshairs of change, an assemblage of the most interested parties comes together to formulate, commiserate, celebrate and refashion its community while envisioning the next iteration beyond the current political cycle.
A coterie of whisper network members aligned behind an ethos is different than a private club. Since ethos is the driver, it guides the community to walk a careful line between creating a natural community and exclusivity. Exclusivity usually engenders class separations. A private club like Soho House or Zero Bond sells exclusivity. Only those paying the price of admission gain access. A whisper network's high-quality membership rolls are generated by individual merit. It is in the self-interest of community members to invite highly qualified industry leaders to participate, continuing to increase the value of participation. Since members receive no monetary benefit from inviting new leaders to engage, there is no incentive to lower standards in exchange for meeting monthly or quarterly sales goals.
Community rules exist, however they read simply: be nice, pay-it-forward, no direct selling, bring your best self to the space, embrace rule zero (see HBR March 17, 2007, Robert Sutton). Humor, frivolity, and fun are actively courted, given the frequent seriousness of the subject matter at the center of the ethos. Social impact, climate, democracy, war, refugees, and other galvanizing themes are weighty to say the least.
The power of a whisper network lies in its ability to attract and sustain the belief system that drives culture-making. It is a mesh network that can morph and change directions, as the tides of social and political constructs change. It exists as long as its purpose is necessary. It can pause, disband, reformulate and evolve as it doesn't hold tight to having to be anything other than what it is. It is not shaped by policy, privilege, birthright or family lineage.
Why is the whisper network succeeding now? The formulation of the whisper network itself has no public policy or position; it does not organize protests or deliver proclamations. It respects the right of its community to make individual efforts toward these types of actions; however, the whisper network acknowledges none of them. It resonates as an expression of rebellion against tyranny of any kind, whether social, political or cultural, no matter its source. It celebrates genuine freedom of expression, the right to gather with one's chosen community, and the inalienable right to have fun even in challenging times. It will exist as long as it is necessary and will dissolve when and if its raison d'etre is no more.
